Furthermore, globalization is likely to increase the risk of secessionism only in very specific conditions and while some self-determination movements may find globalization useful, on the whole countries with more open economies appear less likely to house self determination movements and are more likely to implement policies of fiscal centralization.

Why has the war on terror been so pervasive in Western democracies? How is it that the war on terror became such a potent organising principle after September 11, 2001? The answers to these questions go beyond the nature of 9/11 as an event and the subsequent counter-terrorism responses.
